Magic Garden's Loosie Strain Takes Top Honors at Two Major Competitions

New York cultivator wins at MJ Unpacked and High Times Cannabis Cup, signaling quality breakthrough in East Coast markets

Magic Garden's Loosie Strain Takes Top Honors at Two Major Competitions

Magic Garden Botanicals took back-to-back wins at two of the industry's most competitive events, with its Loosie strain earning top recognition at both MJ Unpacked and the High Times Cannabis Cup.

The New York-based cultivator operates in New York and New Jersey, two states that legalized recreational cannabis within months of each other in 2021, and is expanding across the Northeast's adult-use markets.

The two markets are in very different shape. New York's adult-use program launched in December 2022 but has struggled with slow licensing rollouts and competition from unlicensed shops. New Jersey's market has grown fast since opening in April 2022, with monthly sales consistently topping $150 million.

Two awards, two judging panels

The High Times Cannabis Cup remains one of the industry's most prestigious awards, with blind judging panels evaluating entries across multiple categories. MJ Unpacked is newer to the awards space but has become a major industry gathering where operators present premium products to buyers and investors.

Winning at both events shows consistency across different panels and evaluation criteria. In a young market like New York, where many cultivators are still refining their operations, that recognition can translate directly into retail shelf space and consumer demand.

What awards do for sales

Magic Garden's success with Loosie follows a familiar pattern in mature cannabis markets: award-winning strains drive consumer purchases and retailer interest. In California and Colorado, Cannabis Cup winners have historically seen sales spikes of 30 to 50 percent in the weeks after a win.

The Northeast is a harder place to do it. New York and New Jersey operators lack the established supply chains and consumer bases of West Coast states and are building brand recognition from scratch. Limited retail licenses create bottlenecks even for award-winning products.

Room to grow

The timing could matter for Magic Garden's growth strategy. New York regulators continue expanding the state's retail footprint, with dozens of new dispensary licenses expected in 2025. New Jersey is considering allowing more cultivation facilities to meet surging demand.

For Loosie specifically, the awards give Magic Garden third-party validation that could help it negotiate better terms with multi-state operators and regional chains. Several MSOs have recently announced plans to expand in both states, which opens potential distribution channels for proven cultivators.

Holding up across two competitive markets and two separate judging panels suggests the company's cultivation protocols are dialed in. Retailers and distributors weigh that when deciding which brands to carry as shelf space gets more contested.

Magic Garden has not announced plans to expand beyond New York and New Jersey, though Connecticut and Pennsylvania are logical next steps for a Northeast-focused cultivator.
