Curaleaf International has rolled out a medical cannabis education platform for healthcare professionals in Poland, offering free clinical training as the European nation's medical program continues to expand.
The platform provides structured courses designed to help doctors and other medical professionals understand cannabinoid therapeutics, patient evaluation, and prescribing protocols. Poland legalized medical cannabis in 2017, but physician education has remained a barrier to broader patient access.
"There's a significant knowledge gap among healthcare providers across Europe," said Antonio Costanzo, CEO of Curaleaf International. "This platform addresses that by giving clinicians evidence-based resources they can access on their own schedule."
Poland's Growing Market
Poland represents one of Europe's fastest-growing medical cannabis markets, with patient numbers climbing from roughly 3,000 in 2020 to more than 40,000 by late 2023. The country allows medical cannabis prescriptions for conditions including chronic pain, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis.
But the market has faced challenges. Many physicians remain hesitant to prescribe cannabis due to limited training in medical school and concerns about regulatory compliance. Industry observers say education initiatives like Curaleaf's could help accelerate adoption.
The training modules cover pharmacology, drug interactions, dosing strategies, and legal frameworks specific to Polish regulations. Healthcare professionals who complete the courses receive continuing medical education credits.
Curaleaf's European Strategy
Curaleaf International operates across multiple European markets, including the UK and Germany. The company has been expanding its medical education efforts as part of a broader strategy to normalize cannabis prescribing among mainstream physicians.
The Polish platform follows similar initiatives Curaleaf launched in the UK, where the company partnered with medical societies to train general practitioners. Those programs have reached more than 2,500 clinicians since 2021.
"We're not just selling products," Costanzo said. "We're building the infrastructure that allows medical cannabis to become part of standard care."
Curaleaf's parent company, based in Massachusetts, has faced financial pressures in the U.S. market but continues to prioritize its international operations. The company reported €12.3 million in international revenue for the third quarter of 2024, up 18% year-over-year.
What's Next
Curaleaf plans to expand the education platform to additional European markets in 2025, with Germany and Italy identified as priority countries. The company is also developing patient education materials to complement the physician training.
Poland's medical cannabis market is projected to reach €200 million in annual sales by 2026, according to industry analysts. Whether physician education can keep pace with patient demand remains an open question.
